How to get to Redang Island – By Air, Boat, Ferry & Yatch

Redang Island or Pulau Redang is a tourist hub that is located 45km away from the coast of Malaysia. It consists of islands that are rich in white sand and clear water. Being a tropical paradise, Redang Island offers many activities that attract western tourist population and is a source of enjoyment. How to get to Redang Island

There are not many ways to get to Redang Island except for a plane ride and boat. No roads lead directly to the Island but considering the tourist influx there are seasons when the travel rates are cheaper. How to get to Redang Island is described in detail below. Travel by Air

Berjaya Air is the only one carrier that offers trips to the Island and from the Island. The airstrip that receives flights is located near the Taaras Beach and Spa Resort. This area is at the south of the island.

There are flights from Kuala Lumpur as well as Singapore that will take you to Redang Island. A one way flight can be booked from Kuala Lumpur at about RM249 (Malaysian Ringgit) and from Singapore at RM350. Berjaya Air flies from Subang Airport from Kuala Lumpur and the total flight time from KL to Redang Island is about 55 minutes. Changi Airport in Singapore offers an 80 minute flight time from Singapore to Redang.

If there is a need to go to other resorts then a car or ferry ride is to be arranged in advance. There are resorts that offer transport facility to and from the airport at about RM40 but this has to be included in the final booking.

Traveling by air is the easiest way as to get to Redang Island. You will though miss all the adventures getting to Redang Island by other ways described below.

Travel by Boat

Many tourists do prefer to travel to Redang Island by boat since it is cheaper. The boat service is offered at Merang Jetty, that is located a bit far from Kuala Terengganu. The ticket price is RM40 for one way trip and RM80 for two way.

It takes about 40 minutes of a comfortable boat ride to get to Pasir Panjang. Resort ferry from Merang departs at 10am in the morning and from Redang at 8:30 am and 11:30 am.

The departure from Merang of resort ferry Mutiara and Pelangi is at 9:30am. From Pulau Redang however, it differs and Mutiara departures at 11am while Pelangi between 8-10 am.

Laguna Redang Island Resort ferry offers two departures from Merang at 9:30 am and 12 pm. They also offer two departures from Redang 9 am and 11:30 am.

The another option is to fly to Kuala Terengganu which is a one hour flight from Kuala Lumpur and then catch a boat to the Redang Island. There are many flights that take on the route and some cost as low as RM100 (if you’re lucky).

Travel by Ferry

Ferry rides are available for the month of March to October which take people from the Shahbandar jetty that is located in central Kuala Terengganu to the Berjaya jetty which is located near the Berjaya Resort, south of the island.

The journey is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and the ferry ride fare for two ways is RM100 per adult and RM50 per child.

Kuala Terengganu offers a public ferry ride to and from the island thrice a day. The ferry departs from Terengganu at 9am, 10:30am and 3pm. While, from Pulau Redang the ferry can be caught back as early as 7am, 11am and 1pm.

A ride for six people will cost around MYR 400 and the journey is about 60 minutes. There is no fixed schedule of the ferry, but rather depend on the season and people going.

Yacht ride to Redang

Yachts can be rented from the Shahbandar jetty if the group consists of many people. This might be a suitable option if you’re going with a large group but certainly not feasible if the group is small.
